We are closing our doors

effective 12/31/2011

Scarves From The Heart began in October of '06 and our team has thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the five years we've had the privilege of serving our local community through this project. Sadly, in light of the ongoing health issues of our key team members, we have made the very difficult decision to close the project effective 12/31/2011.

It has been a heart wrenching decision, and one that has not been made without a great deal of though and prayer. We looked at the option of passing it on to a group or another individual but didn't find a solution we considered viable.

We'd like to thank each and every person, and there were many, who made scarves, shawls, and even hats, so that we could in turn share them with the members in our community who are battling cancer. Your generosity was so great that we were able to share the many scarves we received with not only two cancer centers but also the local homeless shelter and the Women's shelter. We could not have done it without you! Thank you doesn't begin to tell you how much we appreciate each of you!

The one thing we hope each of you who read this, especially those who've spent hours knitting, crocheting, and sewing the scarves that you so generously donated, take away from this is that you can make a difference in your own community. It isn't necessary to look for a great cause to support; there are needs in every community that you can fill. If your community has a children's home, a retirement home, a homeless shelter, a soup kitchen, a hospital, or any of many other types of service programs, contact them and ask how you can help serve your community with your craft! If you can provide a warm hat and scarf to one homeless person, or to a person who has lost everything in a fire, you will know the joy of serving in your own community. You can make a difference!

Our mailbox will be active for a few more months, and if scarves come in we'll be sure to get them to one of the local cancer centers. The email addressscarvesfromtheheart@comcast.net will remain active. If you have questions on how to start a project in your community I'll be happy to share what we've learned.

Our Donors:

Our donors are as varied as the scarves we receive, knitted and crocheted in a variety of designs, yarns and colors.  These folks are young, and not so young, they are students, working mothers and wives, as well as stay at home moms and retired folk.  They are both men and women, as are the recipients of their generosity  Their skills at their chosen craft run the gamut from beginner to seasoned expert, to designers.  In spite of these differences they have one important thing in common - very big hearts.  They give knowing that the scarves they've worked tirelessly to complete are going to a very small charity in a community that isn't local for many of them.  Often our crafters are people whose loved ones have or have had cancer, and some are cancer survivors themselves.  Each holds a special place in the hearts of those of us at Scarves From The Heart and to each we'd like to say "Thank You!"

They come from as many backgrounds as they do geographical areas. The first donation to the St. Joseph's Regional Cancer Centerincluded scarves from as far away as Israel and Australia, and as close as next door.

Some scarves are made of the finest wools, others from yarn recycled from a previously loved garment, or inherited from an elderly relative. No matter the fiber, the love and caring that went into each stitch will be felt by the recipient.

If you'd like to be a donor but can't afford the yarn, check with local groups, they may be able to provide yarn.  Some local yarn stores have yarn baskets to use for charity.  We hope no one is kept from donating due to lack of yarn.  If you can't find affordable yarn in your area go over to our contact us page and let us know. We will make every effort to help get you the supplies to make a scarf.

Our Recipients:
It was by chance that the St. Joseph's Regional Cancer Center was the recipient of our first donation. It was their name that my eyes found in the phone book first. The friendly voice on the other end of the phone who knew just who would handle my request made dealing with them a real pleasure.

Dealing with a cancer center wasn't something I'd done before, and to be frank I didn't know what to expect. But the atmosphere at the St. Joseph's Regional Cancer Center is calming and friendly. Jim Linderman, coordinator of support and education is my contact at the cancer center. When Jim asked if we could do a photo shoot with the scarves, Jim's wife and I enjoyed the project and had a lot of fun with it and Jim was a great sport about it!

We have now begun delivering scarves to a second cancer center. In August  2007, when I called the St. Joseph's Regional Cancer Center to make arrangements to deliver scarves they asked me to share them with another treatment center, the Stockton Hematology Oncology center. At both centers they were thrilled that we had 80+ scarves to divide between them. This was our first delivery to the Stockton Hematology Oncology center and they were very receptive and gracious. While we were there stocking the shelves two patients chose scarves for themselves. Another patient told us thank you and how grateful they are for the scarves. It just makes my heart sing! Usually we don't get contact with the patients, but at SHO we deliver to the very area where patients are receiving chemo and I have to tell you that putting a face on these patients really rips at your heart, but at the same time makes me want to knit all the faster to add other centers to our list of recipients and assure the success of "Scarves From The Heart"! It makes me impatient to get our web site up and running.

In October 2008, we began providing scarves to the St. Teresa Cancer Center, and in December we were able to provide scarves, along with a few hats, to a local facility that provides services to the homeless and underpriviledged.
